After a 4-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at Matador Diamond signaled the end of the most futile of seasons in CSUN’s history, catcher Mikayla Thielges pitched the idea that 2012 had been a worthy learning experience.
“This season was not a waste at all,” she said.
With the Matadors (10-42, 5-15 Big West) finishing the year tied for last place in the Big West Conference with a winning percentage of 0.192, it doesn’t seem like there’d be much to rescue from 2012, but if CSUN became an expert at something this year, that something was staying positive.

RIVERSIDE – In a season full of struggles, hitting pitcher Mia Pagano has been the brightest spot for CSUN.
So with the Matadors down to their last out and trailing by one in Game 2 of a Saturday doubleheader at UC Riverside, it wasn’t strange to see head coach Tairia Flowers call upon the junior to save them.
At least that’s what it looked like.
“Not necessarily that we tried to put so much pressure on just one player, but just hoping (Pagano) can come in and pick somebody up,” Flowers said.

Following a 7-3 Friday loss in which the Matadors gave up seven consecutive unanswered runs, CSUN head coach Matt Curtis had a lengthy chat with his team, particularly about defensive mistakes.
The Matadors had only one error on the day, but also recorded six wild pitches, making their comeback attempt an all-afternoon uphill battle they eventually lost.
“We had a pretty big talk about (the mistakes),” CSUN left fielder Nate Ring said.
Curtis’ words evidently drove the defensive message home about as much as CSUN drove in runs during its 12-5 dismantling of the Hoosiers Saturday afternoon at Matador Field to even the series. CSUN (7-7) took advantage of multiple Indiana mistakes and avoided committing them itself to take the easy win.

No matter how many times the Matadors have lost this season, pitcher Brianna Elder isn’t used to the feeling of defeat. It stings her every time.
“Losing is always difficult, I never really like to do it,” she said during a Wednesday practice.
It’s not that she should be more acclimated to the feeling, but wins have come sparingly for CSUN in 2012. However, the Matadors are not to be mistaken for the Charlotte Bobcats of softball.

Home for the first time in more than two weeks, the Matadors gave their crowd one exciting sixth inning, but not much else in a 10-6 non-conference loss to Loyola Marymount Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field.
It was ugly for CSUN from the very beginning and for most of the afternoon. Hosting a game for the first time since a 10-8 loss to Rhode Island on March 14, the Matadors (12-16) fell behind 5-0 in the first inning as the Lions (12-12) put up four hits on CSUN starting pitcher Brandon Warner.
Helping LMU’s cause, the Matadors also had two fielding errors in the inning.
